Your Crisis Plan: From Paper to Action

How do you ensure your crisis organization effectively utilizes the crisis plan during an emergency? In this video, I provide tips on how to transition your crisis plan from documentation to practical implementation.

Awareness

It naturally always begins with awareness. Inform the members of your crisis organization about the existence of a crisis plan and its contents. Also, explain why the organization has a crisis plan, ensuring its importance is clear to everyone.

Involve the Crisis Organization in Development

It is even more beneficial if you can involve the members of your crisis organization during the development of the crisis plan. For instance, ask them what they would like to see included. Also, solicit their feedback on draft versions of the plan. This ensures they feel engaged and that it does not become solely 'your document'.

An Action-Oriented Plan

Consider dividing your crisis plan into a policy section and an action-oriented section. The action-oriented section could include, for example, task cards, flowcharts, and pre-planned actions that can be immediately implemented during a crisis.

Digital Crisis Plan

Ensure that the crisis plan is always available and up-to-date. Paper-based plans are difficult to keep current, so it is preferable to manage this digitally.

Accessibility

It is important that all members of the crisis management team know where to find the plan. To avoid having to search through a lengthy crisis plan, it is best to break the plan down into sections. For example, task sheets can be saved as separate documents. With crisis management software, such as CrisisSuite, you can ensure that the right crisis documents are available to those who need them for their specific crisis role.
