Technical Chair

The role of crisis team chair is usually filled by a director on duty or a member of the board of directors. Essentially, this is a logical choice based on the idea that a crisis team must be able to make swift and far-reaching decisions.

However, some organizations choose to have someone else fill the role of chairperson. This is often someone with extensive knowledge and experience in crisis management, such as a crisis coordinator or crisis manager.

The advantage of this is that a technical chairperson need only focus on ensuring that the crisis meeting and the decision-making process run smoothly. The most senior official can then focus on the substance of the matter and making the right decisions.

Of course, this requires careful coordination between the two individuals. The technical chair does not have the authority to make decisions. And the most senior member does not interfere with the chair’s role. In practice, this works very well for crisis teams.
