A crisis team that is truly in control is remarkably easy to recognize. I always look for three key indicators:
Despite the crisis, the atmosphere remains calm. There is no panic, no chaos. Communication is clear, and active listening is evident.
The meeting follows a clear structure: situation assessment, judgment, and decision-making. Everyone understands the next step, and team members adhere consistently to their assigned roles.
The crisis team possesses a clear understanding of the situation (the current state of affairs) and maintains a firm grasp of bottlenecks, decisions, and the status of actions. The logbook continuously supports this clarity.
A crisis team characterized by calmness, structure, and overview has the capacity to think proactively: tomorrow, next week, and beyond. Such a crisis team is genuinely in control.
